He has assiduously worked for more than four decades for the growth and development of not only sociology but also all the social sciences in the entire region of the Asia Pacific. As UNESCO's adviser for social and human sciences in Asia and the Pacific Professor Atal catalyzed thinking on issues of social relevance and promoted research on them. The essays contained in this festschrift include personal reminiscences and evaluations of Professor Atal's work as also those focusing on emerging social science concerns. Hence the title. The book opens with a critical evaluation of Professor Atal's contributions to Asian social science to social science theory and methodology. Besides the encomiums and reminiscences of encounters with Professor Atal it reflect the social science concerns in the global and national contexts. The book has contributions from specialists both Indian and foreign belonging to different social sciences making it interdisciplinary in its orientation. 440 pp.
