Description: In July 2017 the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, set up a nine-member committee of experts headed by Justice B.N. Srikrishna to draft a law for the protection of personal data. The committee submitted its report and a draft bill, known as the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2018, on 27 July 2018. Around the world too there have been significant changes in the development of laws and regulations for the protection of personal data. The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect on 25 May 2018, replacing the previous minimum standards for processing data provided in the Data Protection Directive of 1995. Several other countries then went on to implement or modify laws with respect to data protection in their jurisdictions. Data Protection analyzes the important protection of personal data provisions in India under the current Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Information Technology (Reasonable Security Practices and Procedures and Sensitive Personal Data or Information) Rules, 2011. It also discusses the significant provisions under Personal Data Protection Bill, 2018 and looks at several judgments by the Honourable Supreme Court on the Right to Privacy of individuals. With a view to studying the global trends in data protection, this book examines some of the central provisions of the European GDPR and other data protection regulations across the world.
