505 _aIn India the primary child protection provisions are found in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. Chapter VI of the Act lays out the procedure in relation to a child in need of care and protection and Chapter IX describes certain offenses against children, including cruelty. The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 contains provisions protecting children from sexual assault, sexual harassment, and pornography, and provides for the establishment of special courts for the trial of such offenses. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights was established in March 2007 under the authority of the Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005, to periodically review laws, policies, and programs to ensure that they are compatible with child rights as enshrined in the Constitution of India and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which India is a party.
